National Philanthopy
Our Goal
Because ovarian cancer is a silent disease that effects all women, our organization has found that it is important to focus on research for the cure. Each of our schools will dedicate a week to this philanthropy every Fall semester.
Be sure to stay updated with Lambda Delta Psi at your school to get involved!Join us in supporting research in early detection, prevention, and treatment programs and raising awareness of ovarian cancer!
Ovarian cancer is the #1 cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that roughly 22,000 women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year, and that more than 15,000 women will perish from it this year.
The cancerous cells begin in the ovaries. An ovary (two almond shaped organs) are found on each side of the uterus that stores eggs and produces female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Because of the vague symptoms and shortage of early detection tests, only 19% of cases are found at an early stage. The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not known. The likelihood of developing the disease may be higher if a woman has one or more ovarian cancer risk factors.
Women of all ages are susceptible to this cancer; in ages 35-74, it is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths. When one is diagnosed and treated in the cancer’s earliest stages, there is a 5 year survival rate of over 90%.
